How to Get Shopify Clients: Job Posts, Replatforms and Partner Tiers

How to get Shopify clients in 2026: brands hiring e-commerce staff, brands leaving Adobe Commerce, and what Shopify's Partner Program pays and requires.

By PancakeLast updated November 6, 2026

TL;DR: Shopify clients come from brands that already run Shopify and need more than their team can ship, and from brands leaving Adobe Commerce, BigCommerce or WooCommerce. Both show up in job posts and in what e-commerce leads say in public, so look there first. Shopify's Partner Program pays for the stores you build and transfer, but its Partner Directory opens only once that work earns a qualifying tier, so it follows the first two channels instead of replacing them.

This guide covers how to get Shopify clients as an agency or a developer. Shopify changed what it pays partners on August 10, 2026, and its tiers change again on January 1, 2027, so every program term below carries its date.

Who hires a Shopify agency

Shopify agency clients fall into three groups, and each decides in its own way.

  • Founder-led brands with a handful of staff. They need theme work, apps set up and fixes, and the founder decides. Budgets are small and the work is often one-off.
  • Brands with an e-commerce team, roughly 20 to 500 staff. A head of e-commerce or an e-commerce manager owns the store and buys ongoing work: conversion fixes, custom sections, integrations, new markets. This is the core buyer for most agencies, and the one that leaves public traces.
  • Shopify Plus brands and replatform projects. A VP of digital or a CTO runs a selection with several agencies, a migration plan and a launch date.

The first group is hard to find from the outside, because a solo store rarely posts jobs or talks shop in public. Reach it through app partners, communities and marketplaces. The other two hire, post and replatform in plain view. If most of your work is brochure sites rather than stores, the channels for web design clients rank differently.

1. Past clients and the roadmap after launch

A launched store keeps producing work. Real traffic shows what to fix, apps need tuning, collections change, and sooner or later the brand wants B2B, a new market or a move to Plus.

Send every client a six-month roadmap a few weeks after launch, built from their own sales data, and price the first items as a monthly retainer. Track the e-commerce managers you worked with, too: when one joins another brand, you're the agency they already trust.

Monday task: pick your three best launches, draft a one-page roadmap for each with the five fixes you'd make next, and book a call to walk each client through it.

2. Brands hiring for e-commerce roles

A job post is the clearest sign a brand has Shopify work it can't staff. Three kinds matter:

  • "Shopify developer" or "Shopify theme developer." The store has a backlog now. Offer to clear it while they recruit, then take overflow and larger builds once the hire starts.
  • "E-commerce manager" or "head of e-commerce." The store gets a new owner, who will want a build partner and an opinion on what to fix first.
  • Marketing or operations roles that name Shopify Plus. The brand pays for Plus and runs it with a thin team.

Write to the head of e-commerce, the founder or the COO, never the recruiter. Ask one question about the role: "Saw the e-commerce manager opening. Will that person own the store roadmap, or mostly run promotions?" The answer tells you what to offer. You can run this search on any job board, or as a search for companies hiring a role, which is one of the Plays on Pancake for Shopify agencies.

3. Brands leaving another platform

A replatform is the largest project a Shopify agency sells, and it often starts with a deadline on the old platform. Adobe publishes its own. On its lifecycle page, Adobe Commerce 2.4.6 lost standard support on August 11, 2026 and loses extended support on August 31, 2027, while 2.4.7 loses standard support on May 31, 2027. The same page tells 2.4.6 stores running PHP 8.2 to plan an upgrade or a migration before the end of 2026 to keep PCI compliance.

Every brand on those versions faces an upgrade project or a move, and some will choose Shopify. Find them three ways:

  1. Job posts that name the old platform: Magento, Adobe Commerce, BigCommerce, Salesforce Commerce Cloud or WooCommerce. A post proves the brand runs it today, not that it wants to leave.
  2. Posts from e-commerce leads about replatforming, checkout problems or site speed.
  3. The storefront itself, checked by hand before you write, since a job post can name a tool the store has already left.

Then ask about the deadline, not about Shopify: "Saw Adobe Commerce in your developer posting. Is the team planning the upgrade, or weighing a move?" Some brands will upgrade and a few will go headless. The ones weighing a move want an agency that has done the migration, so lead with a migration case study once they reply. Reading tools from job posts is how you scale this, and the guide to tech stack signals covers the traps.

4. Agencies that serve Shopify brands but don't build

Plenty of agencies work inside Shopify stores without building them: email and SMS agencies running a brand's Klaviyo flows, paid social agencies, SEO and conversion consultants, and app developers whose customers need custom setups. They hear "our theme is broken" before anyone calls a developer.

Offer each one a clear deal: a referral fee on the work it sends, or white-label builds it resells under its own name. Pick three whose clients match yours in size and category, and ask each for one small job you can deliver fast, such as a broken app setup or a slow product page. Deliver it early, and the next request comes without a pitch.

5. What the Shopify Partner Program pays and requires

Joining the Shopify Partner Program is free. Under the terms in Shopify's earning model FAQ, in effect since August 10, 2026, it pays an agency in two ways:

  • Stores you build and transfer. Build each client's store as a development store under your Partner account and transfer it to them. You earn 20% of the subscription fee plus 0.1% of eligible online sales, excluding B2B, for four years. Shopify's own example: a merchant with $1,000,000 of eligible sales in a month earns you $1,000 in sales share that month. Starter and Lite plans earn nothing, and stores launched earlier keep the terms they launched under.
  • Plus referrals. Referring a merchant to Shopify Plus pays a one-time $2,500, for new merchants and upgrades alike. You must submit the lead in your Partner Dashboard before the merchant talks to Shopify Sales, a deal must open within 90 days, and the merchant must sign a Plus or Enterprise agreement and sell more than $5,000. If two partners submit the same merchant, the first qualified lead gets the payout.

Your tier rests on the same activity. In Shopify's Q4 2026 tiering guide, every partner starts at Registered, tiers update on January 1, April 1, July 1 and October 1, and each higher tier needs revenue and new merchants. Shopify counts the stronger of the two revenue figures:

TierNew referral and co-sell revenueOr existing merchant revenueAnd net-new merchants
Select$100,000$500,0001 on Plus or Enterprise, or 10 on standard plans
Plus$500,000$2,500,0002 on Plus or Enterprise, or 40 on standard plans
Premier$2,000,000$10,000,0004 on Plus or Enterprise
Platinum$5,000,000$25,000,0006 on Plus or Enterprise

Revenue counts over a trailing five years. Merchant counts look back five years for Select and Plus, and two years for Premier and Platinum. Existing merchant revenue covers stores you keep supporting, such as through collaborator accounts, so work on retainer clients' stores through collaborator access rather than a borrowed staff login. Standard plans are Basic, Grow and Advanced, credentials are waived for 2026, and the Plus tier is a partner rank, not the Shopify Plus plan.

The directory. The Partner Directory is where merchants look for help, and there is no application form. Shopify's eligibility page says partners at Select tier or above are asked to publish a profile, and that updated tiers taking effect on January 1, 2027 set eligibility at a tier it calls Silver. The Q4 2026 guide lists the directory as a benefit from the Plus tier up. Check your Partner Dashboard before you plan around a listing. Searchers still call it the Shopify Experts directory, though Shopify retired that brand in December 2023.

Read together, the terms say one thing: the program pays for clients you win, and the directory arrives after enough of them.

6. Marketplaces and communities

Upwork and similar marketplaces bring small Shopify jobs fast: a theme tweak, an app setup, a speed fix. They suit a new developer collecting reviews. Prices sit side by side there, so turn the clients you like into retainers, and check the marketplace's terms before you move one off it.

The Shopify Community forums and e-commerce subreddits carry questions from store owners every week. Answer the hard technical ones in full. It builds a name slowly, and it brings the odd founder-led brand that wants the person who solved its problem.

Running replatform and hiring Plays in Pancake

Pancake is our product. It spots brands and people showing a buying signal in job posts and public posts, and it opens the conversation under your name. For a Shopify agency, three signals carry most of the weight:

  • brands hiring an e-commerce manager or a Shopify developer;
  • brands whose job posts name Shopify Plus, Magento or BigCommerce, read from the posts themselves, since Pancake can't see which platform a storefront runs on;
  • e-commerce leads posting about a replatform, checkout or site speed.

A Play is one sentence, such as "Find heads of e-commerce at US brands with 20 to 200 staff whose job posts name Magento or BigCommerce." Every lead comes with one line on why it fits. The first message asks about the signal and sells nothing: "Saw Magento in your developer posting. Is the platform staying next year, or is a move on the table?"

The limits are plain. Pancake can't list every Shopify store: the platform signal only sees brands whose job posts name it, and one-person stores rarely show up. Messages go out as direct messages from one teammate's own account, not from your agency page, and never as email. Pricing runs from $99 a month per workspace, which buys 60,000 credits a month (pricing). The free trial gives you 7 days and 30,000 credits, and it needs a card to start. Frequently asked questions

How do Shopify developers find clients?
Start with brands that already run Shopify and need more than their team can ship: job posts for a Shopify developer or an e-commerce manager say so. Add brands leaving another platform, and agencies that serve Shopify brands without building, such as email and paid social shops. Build every new store as a development store under your Partner account, so the work counts toward your tier.
How do I join the Shopify Partner Directory?
You can't apply. As of November 2026, Shopify's help center says partners at Select tier or above are asked to publish a profile, and that updated tiers take effect on January 1, 2027. Select takes at least $100,000 in new referral revenue or $500,000 from merchants you support, plus one Plus or Enterprise merchant or ten on standard plans.
How much does Shopify pay partners for referrals?
Under terms in effect since August 10, 2026, a partner who builds and transfers a store earns 20% of its subscription fee plus 0.1% of its eligible online sales for four years. Referring a merchant to Shopify Plus pays a one-time $2,500 if you submit the lead before the merchant talks to Shopify Sales. Starter and Lite plans earn no revenue share.
Is the Shopify Plus partner tier worth chasing?
Only as a result of client work, not as a goal of its own. As of November 2026, the Plus tier takes $500,000 in new referral revenue or $2.5 million from merchants you support, plus two Plus or Enterprise merchants or 40 on standard plans. It brings a directory listing and, for some partners, a partner success manager and marketing funds.
How do I find brands that want to move to Shopify?
Look for brands whose job posts name Adobe Commerce, Magento, BigCommerce or Salesforce Commerce Cloud, and for e-commerce leads posting about a replatform. Adobe's own lifecycle page sets deadlines: Adobe Commerce 2.4.6 lost standard support on August 11, 2026, and its extended support ends August 31, 2027. Ask about their upgrade plans, not about Shopify.
